Foundations Day on 29 September, 2024
Architectural lecture and guided tours

The baudenkmal bundesschule bernau association and the Baudenkmal Bundesschule Bernau Foundation invite you to the Day of Foundations on Sunday, 29 September 2024. The event will focus on the work of the foundation, which will welcome architecture enthusiasts and Bauhaus enthusiasts to the UNESCO World Heritage Site on this special day.

11 a.m. Visitor Centre Lecture by Dr Kaija Voss ‘Arieh Sharon and Bauhaus Modernism’
Arieh Sharon, the father of Israeli modernism, was a student of the Bauhaus architecture department and was involved in the construction of the ADGB Trade Union School in Bernau. Arieh Sharon moved to Tel Aviv in 1931 to run his own architectural practice and realise pioneering social models for the new state. His life's work includes numerous buildings in the International Style in Tel Aviv, Haifa and Jerusalem: cinemas, residential buildings, kibbutzim and many medical buildings. There were 25 Bauhaus architects who arrived in Tel Aviv in the 1930s. Many of the architects and their buildings have been forgotten today, just as the National Socialist rulers wanted from 1933 onwards. Our historical-architectural search for traces leads from Germany to Israel and beyond, all over the world. The most important Bauhaus complex on the African continent is located in Ile-Ife, Nigeria. These are buildings on the campus of Obafemi Awolowo University. The masterplan for this was drawn up by Arieh Sharon and his son Eldar.
